By the looks of things, it seems like 2011 will see a flurry of sequels. Let’s hope we can add Diablo III, Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm, DOTA 2, Metal Gear Solid: Rising, Hitman 5 and a third Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to that list. Thankfully, the PC version of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is all set to be released in February, 2011 (“Fantastico!”).
And let’s not forget Mass Effect 3, Killzone 3, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Max Payne 3, Dragon Age 2, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the Wii-exclusive The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Judging by the restless anticipation and ceaseless drooling in online gamer forums, we have compiled a list of the hottest of upcoming titles. Read on.
Rage (September 13)
From the developers of Doom and Quake comes a good-looking amalgam of shooting, driving, racing and adventure set in a post-apocalyptic environment. The first-person action/adventure hybrid is powered by id Software’s new id Tech 5 engine and is scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2011 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. [Watch Demo]
Dead Space 2 (January 25)
Electronic Arts and Visceral Games are set to release a sequel to their successful sci-fi survival horror in January of 2011 on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. And guess what? The new Isaac Clarke does more than just groan when whacked by Necromorphs. He speaks. Hopefully, this won’t impair the original title’s high fear-factor. [Watch Trailer]
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (March 8th)
The third chapter of the Deus Ex first-person RPG series is scheduled for release in March 2011 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. Human Revolution’s storyline is set in a time preceding that of the first game. First impressions reveal that the game has a refined, responsive enemy AI along with espionage, combat, tech and social gameplay elements. [Watch Trailer]
Star Wars: The Old Republic (Q2)
BioWare has announced the release of SWTOR, a PC-only MMORPG follow-up to its acclaimed Star Wars RPG series in Q2, 2011. Players will be able to choose between 8 classes, four each belonging to the two chief factions of the Star Wars universe, the Empire and the Republic. [Watch Trailer]
Bulletstorm (February 22)
EA’s upcoming Bulletstorm is a vicious, futuristic first-person shooter developed by the team that brought you Painkiller (People can Fly, Epic Games). Set in an alien world filled with mutants and monsters, players will need to “kill with skill” to survive via a skillshot mechanic wherein points are rewarded based on the creativity of each kill. Crysis 2 (March 22)
Come spring, the nano-suit doning Nomad will be back to kick some alien tushi in the sequel to Crytek’s hit sci-fi FPS which will be published by EA for the PC, X360 and PS3. Crysis 2 has CryEngine 3 working at its core and will have, as promised by the CEO of Crytek himself, “the smartest enemies ever”. [Watch Trailer]
Portal 2 (April 20)
Get ready to put your brains to the test in the coming April, when Valve releases a stand-alone sequel to the hit first-person puzzler that came in 2007 with The Orange Box game bundle. The original had a hilarious script and apparently, the sequel isn’t planning to let you off without a laugh either. [Watch Trailer]
Mortal Kombat (April)
A totally revamped Mortal Kombat (gameplay and storyline) is set for release in April next year. Following Street Fighter IV’s example, NetherRealm Studios are switching the 9th installment in the series to 2.5D (3D graphics on a 2D plane). Batman: Arkham City (Q4)
Hold on to your Bat-Cowls ‘cause Arkham City mayhem is around the corner. That’s right. The sequel to the award-winning Batman: Arkham Asylum has been given the Bat-Signal for the fourth quarter of 2011. The game will be released on PC, X360 and PS3. [Watch Trailer]
Gears of War 3 (Q4)
Epic Games’ Xbox-exclusive third-person shooter series has a highly anticipated sequel scheduled for release by Microsoft Game Studios in the last quarter of 2011 with new weapons and game modes. [Watch Gameplay Trailer]
